Emergent Women has posted the first three selections for their book club. We will start in December with God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It (Plus) by Jim Wallis , and then move onto The Dance of the Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd
in January and in February we will tackle Hagar, Sarah, And Their Children: Jewish, Christian, And Muslim Perspectives by Phyllis Trible
.
None of these books reside on my shelves or in the many stacks around my house, so they don’t qualify for the From the Stacks Winter Challenge that Beth let me know about. The challenge is to read ” 5 books that we have already purchased, have been meaning to get to, have been sitting on the nightstand and haven’t read before. No going out and buying new books. No getting sidetracked by the lure of the holiday bookstore displays.”
I guess that means that The Bird in the Tree by Elizabeth Goudge ,which is the January selection for my local book club, won’t count either.
There’s lots of books in my house to choose from but it may be a little difficult narrowing down my choices. Hhmmm, what will I read? I think I will go peruse my shelves … be right back . . .
Ok, I was going to start my list with A New Kind of Christian: A Tale of Two Friends on a Spiritual Journey by Brian McClaren but technically I have already read that and though I intend to re-read it, I will not put it on the list.
So, here are my five books for the challenge:
To discuss with my husband:
The Story We Find Ourselves In: Further Adventures of a New Kind of Christian by Brian McClaren
The next two are fiction books that have sat by my bed for months now. I need to finish them:
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (Oprah’s Book Club) by Carson McCullers
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
I bought the following book for myself back in June to nurture my creative pursuits. I haven’t picked it up since I brought it home. I need permission to take time to be creative. I hope I will receive that from this book:
The Creative License: Giving Yourself Permission to be the Artist You Truly Are
This challenge doesn’t include the list of books I will read aloud to my children which will consist of but is most definitely not limited to:
The Penultimate Peril (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 12) by Lemony Snicket
The Beatrice Letters (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket
The End (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 13) by Lemony Snicket
In preparation for the release of the movie on December 15, 2006, we must read:
And in hopeful preparation of the release of the 7th book next summer, we are beginning again:
Harry Potter Hardcover Box Set (Books 1-6)
Using the following book as a literary guide as we go along
Then Tony Jones will be in Charlotte at the Emerging Discussion Meetup on December 2nd and I might want to read something written by him before then. A few choices are:
The Sacred Way: Spiritual Practices for Everyday Life (Emergent YS)
An Emergent Manifesto of Hope (emersion: Emergent Village’s resources for communities of faith) – This book won’t be available until next year but you can find a pdf excerpt here.
Read. Think. Pray. Live. (TH1NK)– I think I own this already.. which means it would count for the challenge except it’s not a book for a challenge; it is a book to chew slowly and digest and enjoy.
Whew! Does just writing and/or reading my post about reading all these books count for something? Probably not so I should step away from the computer now and get started reading.
Immersed in the Mystery,
Cynthia

Ok… I read the Creative Liscence (highly recommend it if you think you aren’t creative or are jsut learning to be) AND I just joined their Yahoo group (Everyday Matters). I was going to let you know about it so you could join me there!! Aren’t coincidences like that lovely?
p.s. that looks like more than 5 books!

You know that I don’t believe in coincidences. That is a God-moment!
I am starting Creative License tonight and will head on over to sign up for the yahoo group.
There are only five books on my list that I already own (except some of the ones that I will read to my children)
But it is still a huge list, isn’t it? I am probably being amibitious but I hope to read at least some of them.
